Is it just me, or is the heel of a loaf of bread just not appealing? I know it is wasteful to throw it away, and after whining about gas prices (and prices and the recession in general) I should not be so picky, but I just can't do it. Even when my great friend offered me a sandwich on a heel of bread the other day. I just couldn't eat it. I guess being around a toddler is rubbing off on me.

I have a solution. Feed the ducks. Find a place where there are ducks--a little pond, I don't know--and save all your little heels and take the girls to feed the ducks. They will love it, you won't waste the bread, but the most important part is--you won't have to eat them!
You are so funny! But I have to admit that I don't like the heel either... unless it's grandma sycamore bread, then even the heel is delicious ;) Or homemade bread out of the oven with butter, I'll definitely eat the heel then, but it's not as good as the middle slices. But normal bread, ewww to the heel. That's a fun idea to go and feed them to the ducks!
I never have likes that part. I don't even offer it to my kids. I feed it to my husband or if he is not looking I toss it....so wasteful I know I complain about price of everything in the grocery store, but can't eat it!
from your "great friend"! ha ha! I can't believe your writing about it...sorry to give you a complex! Normally I don't use the ends either, we were just in dire straights there! But, wouldn't you say that, THAT bread was much more like "grandma sycamore" bread though? That wasn't "normal bread" was it? That was a thick piece of yummy homemade, honey whole wheat! All I have to say is you missed out. That ham and swiss sandwich was yummy!! ;-)
Sorry I didn't have more bread. Next time I'll be more prepared...or else we'll just make OUR sandwiches before the pb&j for the kids. I've been known in a pinch to put the pb on the crust side of the heel and put together backwards hoping that my kids wouldn't notice.
I just give the heel to George, he'll eat it.
I would love to get in contact with Jakes brother or his wife about San Francisco!! I will call you today.
Jord: The heel makes great toast, so try it for that! Interesting observation, though, and I'd guess that there are many (maybe most) people who don't like the heel. It is the best part of homemade bread, for sure. But, if all else fails, the suggestion to feed the ducks is a good one.

I agree, I don't love the heel either, but if I'm hungry enough, I'll eat it! Brody will always eat it too. I like the feeding the ducks with it idea though.
I only like heels with cheese melted on them. I put some slices on the good side, and stick it in the oven on broil until the cheese melts. I think this is actually the exact purpose they are made for. Give it a try.
That's funny that your friend would offer you a snadwich, yeah I wouldn't eat it either, unless it had already been made. Ryan eats the heels, but if he isn't around I throw it away without another thought about it. Is it wrong that I don't feel bad about it?
Haha! I love it that most of us feed the heel to our men. I wonder how they feel about it? I guess most them are just happy to be fed.
Good idea on saving it for the ducks Whit. Do you think it will save for 4 months until we can go outside again?
And sorry Bethany for being so bratty- I totally understand how dire straights are and would have eaten it were I totally famished. You are a better person than me. :)
And Linny, no I don't feel bad either for tossing my heels most of the time. Usually they're stale by the time we get through the loaf anyway.
Heels from that kind of bread are no good at all. If you have a homemade loaf or something artisinal, the heel can be quite tasty.
funny post- like all the other comments, Mike is the only one who eats the heels in our house. I used to unload them on him when I make french toast and since I'd have a build up from several loaves, all he got served was a plate full of heels. One day I didn't have any, so he got the good stuff. After that meal he announced that he would prefer non-heel french toast from now on!
