Photos

Me and my sister circa 1980s
My sister-in-law Courtney unknowilgly inspired me to get back to work on our family photos.

She was talking about labeling her photo albums "when she stopped working to stay home with her baby" and I thought, that is what I'm doing right now so I better get to work.

But here is the problem: I don't know the best way to go about it.

What are your best photo printing/organizing/compiling/displaying systems?

Do you keep a photo book for your family?

For each child?

Do you print out pictures?

I already have 4x6 photos printed out from each year of our married life that I have been putting in 9x9 inch binders but they need to be labeled.

I have a pile of 8x10 and 5x7s of us and our children through the years but I'm not sure what to do with them either.

Photos are a wonderful way to document and remember your life but taking care of them is work.

I'm totally in the middle of doing the same thing! I am in the sorting and tossing stage though(tons of dumb high school/college pics!), so I don't have a final system yet. I'm curious to hear what others have to say. I do have a binder for each of us that I'm organizing all of our memorabilia in. One thing I have decided is nothing in a box when I'm done!! If I am keeping it then it better be important enough to display in a book. I'm also trying to limit myself to one large binder per person. Do you really want to look through 30 binders about your life or someone else's life?
Anyway this doesn't really answer your photo questions! Hopefully others have some great tips!

I'm sorry, Jord, because I have no suggestions. But I'm very happy to see that great photo of both of you girls at that age. You were such wonderful little kids, and you are now such great moms yourselves!

I thought that I would do a book for each kid of their lives, but so far that has not happened. Right now whatever goes on the blog ends up in a book and that's it. You can print photo books through iphoto or shutterfly which are both awesome and really easy to use. I think there are others that I'm not familiar with. Or you can use blurb to slurp up your blog to print into a book.

I have high hopes of making more specific photo books, but for now the family activities that end up being blogged about are our albums.

PS - that picture of you and Claire is awesome! I totally had the same hairstyle as you. And hello, Ellie senior!

Geez, I sound so negative! I like looking through things from our past! ...To clarify, my goal is to try and fit all of our paper memorabilia(certificates, notes, drawings, etc) to one large binder a person. I do have quite a few picture albums though, but not a good labeled system!

Jenny! You are so funny and don't sound negative at all. One must purge!

I think it is totally true that you can only carry around/look at/deal with so many binders of pictures and I'm glad you're hard at work.

What kind of binders are you using for your memorabilia? That is the kind of stuff I struggle knowing what to do with.

Last year I did start deleting pictures on iphoto and that helped a lot. I get rid of the ones that are blurry, where no one is looking, with strange faces, that I'd never print out. From then I can keep things in a more manageable state in our electronic files at least.

Hey, who put Lauren and Lizzie in that picture?
