I need some suggestions.
I haven't exercised regularly for almost 5 years and thought there is no time like the present to start. Today we joined the gym down the street and the girls survived an hour in the play area. My only problem is that I've never been a gym member, and don't know quite what to do.
My inclination is to just run, or, being realistic, speed walk on the treadmill, but I'm sure there are other possibilities.
Some muscle man trainer is going to give me a free training session tomorrow, but if anyone has other ideas I'd love them!
Oh, and happy tax day.

Way to go Jordan! My suggestion, do something you enjoy that will keep you going back. If your gym offers classes those are a fun way to add variety. Learn how to properly lift weights; often times this exercise is overlooked by women, but very important for bone health. Plus you'll enjoy the added benefit of increase muscle mass which burns more calories than other tissue. Don't worry you're a woman so you will not get bulky. Sorry for the long comment. It's fun to actually use knowledge that I studied for four years. If you want any more drop me a line.
I suggest classes. That's what it is all about. See if your gym offers the Les Mills classees. That's what Sara teaches. They are so structured and trained to make sure you get the best work out possible without hurting yourself. You will notice such a difference in your whole body. I miss being a member of a gym. I am a quitter, so going on the treadmill doesn't work for me, because when I get tired, I get off. But in a class you HAVE to stay the whole time. I mean nobody is gaurding the door, but come on, you do have your pride of having other people watch you leave. Spinning is awesome, and I suggest the sculpting classes and body combats. Facebook Sara, she lives at the gym, she'll tell you what is worth it and what is a waste of time. Plus she has the figure to prove that she knows what she is talking about. Stacey is excellent as well.
I don't like classes personally because I don't like other people looking at me (no one does but it just feels like they do!) I like the tredmill but the secret is to do variations....walk at 39 for 5 minutes. Kick it up to 5 for two minutes, back down back up until you get to seven or more and back down, etc. DON'T just walk at the same speed the whole time.
Wow- those are some good comments! I don't have anything to add really. I love pilates class, toning, step aerobics and spinning. And I do love the treadmill- with an incline. I can't just run w/o stopping to walk anymore, so it's a better workout when you're walking uphill. Good luck. Let us know how it goes! Oh, and good luck w/ the scared swimmer. That's no good
Good luck, Jord. No advice from me about the gym. I just run. Congratulations, though, on starting an exercise program. It is worth it.
Grin and bear it. It's terrible, but necessary. I'm glad you took the plunge. Now if only your girls would "jump in" without tears.
PS - going with a friend is the only way. For me, no friend, no exercise. That's the way it is.
I really like the step machines and elipticals. I also love the recumbant bike-the one with the seat with a back. I take a book and read for an hour while I bike. Multi-tasking!
Yay! I think you will absolutely love the break and the exercising, it is wonderful :) I would also highly recommend classes. They are so fun, happen at a specific time so you have to get there, and give you a well-rounded work out. Having a trainer show you around the gym and where all the equipment is and how it works is a great way to start just so you know what you can do there. You're going to love it :)
Take some fun classes you will meet lots of other moms, have fun and get in shape!
