A hard time

These sweeties take swimming lessons together. They go twice a week for a month. Their first lessons last week were great and they were so brave. But today, my sweeties (with the pink pom poms) had a hard time.  A REALLY hard time. Something had them freaked and they did not want to go in the water. I had to beg. I had to plead. I had to turn into "mean mommy." I had to threaten a...dare I say it...spanking. Finally they got in, but there were tears, reaching arms, whimpers, pleading "mommy"s said over and over for a full 30 minutes.

It was a long 30 minutes.

We have to go back on Thursday and I am scared for what it will hold. I feel bad for the other sweeties, who were brave at first, but then got freaked by my sweeties carrying on. I hope it goes better. I hope that was the low point of swimming lessons.

I hope.

I hope.

I hope.

When I was 5, we had to go swimming with our school. I was afraid of the water and wouldn't get in. Eventually the teacher got so mad that she PUSHED me in. I don't think I've ever recovered because even to this day I am afraid of being under water. It is quite annoying when i go boating with friends and family and I am too afraid to try water skiing. So, no matter how mad you get, DON'T push her into the water liek my teacher did (not that you would) :-)I'm glad she finally went into the water. She probably just needs to develop some confidence.

Oh and sorry for the spelling error... I didn't catch it until after I'd posted the comment :-)

I never had any of my kids in swimming lessons, and they all taught themselves to swim by the age of 5, if not sooner. We just went to a wave pool on Saturday and Spencer was swimming underwater by himself, having never had a lesson. Milly had on a great life jacket/swimsuit and was jumping around and playing in the water. I feel pretty confident that she'll be swimming by the end of the summer. I think there is a lot to swimming that is instinctual, and with some wings, some shallow water, and some fun games with the parents, I think they'll learn how. Save yourself the money!

Lessons are good, and the kids will come around. I think threats, bribes, whatever you have to do is okay. Interesting post.

So...how did it go?

Oh no! I am sure as you keep going they'll get the hang of it. I'm also a big briber, it totally works! Especially if all they need is something to push past the fear. I hope it's going better!
