Every few weeks a pool needs to be back-washed- a process by which water that has gone through the pump and stored in the filter needs to be released through a hose down a special drain. So last Thursday night J and I back-washed the pool. Problem solved. However, the next morning as we were eating breakfast my two year old, who was looking out at the pool, says to me, "Mom, where's the water?" I look out the window and see this:

Yes, Lauren, where is all the water? Turns out that if you forget to close the back-wash spigot and your pool pump comes on and runs through the night, it will pump the contents of your pool down the drain. Darn.
So J received a frantic call from me, came home from work, and spent the next many hours refilling the pool, adding conditioner, soda ash, chlorine, and more DE to the filter. Lesson learned.
Now I cannot totally blame J for the incident, as at the time we back-washed the pool I was feeling sick and he took on all the night duties (kids to bed, dishes, etc.) in my place and really did just forget about the spigot. And L had the time of her life playing in, as she termed it, our "new kid pool" with no fear of drowning or going under!

That is so funny! What a shock. But at least L really enjoyed it.
Glad that didn't happen when we were there! Funny about the kid pool and L not being scared. How long will it take to refill?
:( so sad you have been busy with your pool the last few days! Hopefully all will be better soon so you can come out and play.
Maybe the sun can still warm it up when its full again???
Looks like L couldn't wait to get her suit on before she got in the pool! Such excitement to see a new kiddy pool all ready to go. So funny, but sad for you having to refill it. Can't be cheap....I selfishly hope it will be warmed up enough for our next visit.
Whoa! Sounds like owning a pool is a LOT of work.
We refilled it that same day. It took 12 hours with both hoses running at full blast.
Pools are sooo much work! But worth every minute of it. I remeber being like Lauren and loving it when my parents drained the pool and refilled it and I could actually touch without going under. Those times were better than the pool being how it was supposed to be. Kids!
It's sad how quickly the water cools off once the weather starts cooling off in the evenings in Sept. Seems like with how hot it is still during the day that you should be swimming til November! I'm happy for you to have a pool. There's nothing better when you live in AZ. It makes the summers bearable.
Oh dear! That's awesome that Jacob could come right home from work and fix it and Lauren is absolutely adorable playing in her kiddie pool. That's probably way more fun that totally full of water for her! :) Glad it's all fixed! The joys of home ownership.... but I'm still jealous :)
Jord: Sorry about the water emptying out of the pool. As the guilty drain would say, "that sucks."
Anyway, it looks like the kids had a very nice kiddie pool for a while to play in. We look forward to taking a dip in the pool soon! Good for Jake to be the pool maintenance man, as well.
Dang that stinks..at least you could refill it and at least the kiddies were able to enjoy a smaller version for a while.
I have to say when the weather turns cold up here in like a few weeks..I will think about your pool and how warm it is where you are..maybe it will thaw me out enough to survive another winter!
ahh how nice would it be to have a pool?? Well except the maintenance! Looks like you guys do a great job keeping it clean!
I love pools. I wish we had one now, but I HATE to be the caretaker. It is more work than anyone realizes who has never had one. I just have the hot tub to maintain now and that is a chore. I'm glad you got it under control and I also hope the parentals can enjoy a dip when they come!
I don't know if I can ever get in your pool now that I have seen it empty. One of my biggest phobias is empty swimming pools. They totally FREAK me out.
Oh Carol, I repent for posting pictures of the empty pool...I didn't know! I hope you can erase them from memory because we still want you to come down sometime for a visit!
I love the pic of Onion! We are emptying our pool for the season. We filled it 3 different times this year. Yikes! I do miss the "real" kind that you have, but I forgot how much work they are!
