Home phone

I admit it.

I am a bad cell phone person.

I don't always answer it. I rarely hear it ring. I don't take it with me everywhere. I answer it if its convenient.

But we do have a home line.

I'm better about answering that one.

It rings loudly, we have two phones connected to it, and if I'm home I usually get it before the machine picks up.

But there is a problem.

Since we're cheap we ONLY have the phone line. No answering service. No call waiting. No caller ID.

That's right. I said no caller ID.

So when I pick up the home phone I answer it blind.

I kind of like the old-school suspense of not knowing who is on the other line. It can be fun to race to the phone just to see who it is.

However, it also has its disadvantages.

I answer to all telemarketers. I never have phone numbers available to look up later. And if someone calls without leaving a message, I'll never know that they did.

So that's my story about being a dinosaur. If you want to increase your odds of talking to me, call my house. And if you want me to return your call, leave a message.

El fin.

After many years of trial and error, I finally learned this lesson on my own. A post like this would have been helpful, say, in 2007. Such a nice iPhone and it is not used to its fullest potential!

The telephone is both a blessing and a curse. I think you've got the right idea - answer the phone if you want to, and use it for your convenience. I don't hear my cell phone all that often, either, but I am good at returning messages.

ha ha that's funny! I didn't know you didn't have caller ID. That would be very inconvenient at times. I'm not great at answering my cell phone either and I DON'T have a home phone... maybe I should look into that.

I am a major technology person. I had a pager when they first came out, I got a cell phone at 18 and loved it, and have had an iPhone for years. I do not understand how people can be disciplined enough to stay away from technology but it is not always a bad thing. Sometimes I get sick of my phone always being available! :)

My home phone is my answering service. I love having a number that I can give to people that I don't really want to talk to ;) They leave a message, if it's important I can call them back. If we had better cell reception in our house I might be able to get rid of the home phone and set up a google voice number as my answering service. But I do like having a landline. If there was a disaster and all the cell towers were knocked out I could still make a phone call... as long as the phone lines weren't knocked out as well.....

I think we're a dying breed Jord! ;)

We have gone NUTS with the technology haven't we? Some of it is so excessive. Why do I need to track the stars with my cell phone? I mean really, isn't that a bit much. Caller ID...I'm a fan, but hats off to you for going without it. It's kind of like people who don't find out what they're having and are just surprised at the hospital. I couldn't do that, but I sure do think it would be fun. P.S. I can't believe Lauren has a loose tooth! Way to go with the pillow. I guess that is something I need to be thinking of :/

I could not live without caller ID. There are some people that I'm just not in the mood to talk to sometimes. I have to tell the kids "Don't answer that!"
