My friend Bethany sent me this link to this prophetic 1978 BYU devotional address by Elder Neal A. Maxwell. If you have a minute, read it. If you don't have a minute, still read it. In light of the Proposition 8 outcome yesterday, I think this paragraph is particularly inspiring:
"Before the ultimate victory of the forces of righteousness, some skirmishes will be lost. Even in these, however, let us leave a record so that choices are clear, letting others do as they will in the face of prophetic counsel.
There will also be times, happily, when a minor defeat seems probable, but others will step forward, having been rallied to rightness by what we do. We will know the joy, on occasion, of having awakening a slumbering majority out of the decent people of all races and creeds which was, til then, unconscious of itself."

Excellent words to ponder.
Wow. Where did she find that? That really puts things in perspective, I'm so glad you shared it, Jord.
A powerful talk as only Neal A. Maxwell can deliver and with sound advice for us all 30 years later. Amazing.
Thanks, Jord, for the reference. I do think that many were awakened to a sense of what's right by the church's efforts. Now's the time to get on the right side of things.
Glad you liked it! I can't take any credit for finding it. My family living in CA forwarded the quote to me. All I did was find the source, add the link and send it to a few close friends. My guess was that someone was searching by keywords on LDS.org and found it, but I really don't know.
I'm printing this out and giving it to my friend.
so JL: Is your friend the friend I'm thinking of???
