Bathrooms: A man's job

For most of my life, my bathrooms have been cleaned by a man. I had my own bathroom from age 14 on, and my Dad faithfully cleaned it every Saturday morning. I would have to occasionally scrub down the shower, and for a time my Mom thought I should clean my own bathroom, but I could stand it dirty longer than she could and my dad would eventually come in and do the job. What a spoiled girl, I know!

(Although, as I think about it my sister doesn't like to clean the bathrooms either so maybe it's just in our genes, or because we were hired to clean the bathroom at my Grandma's business for over a year that was used by three offices and countless people from off of the street, or because we had to take turns cleaning the decrepit bathroom at the bookstore where we both worked throughout high school. Either one was enough to do anyone in).

Well, 9 years later when I married J, I figured that the bathroom was on the list of things a man should take care of. And for the last 4 years, minus a few times I've scrubbed out a sink or wiped down the toilet, J has cleaned the bathrooms for our family. I just love it! He is great at scrubbing everything down, using appropriate chemicals, and all in all doing a better job of it that I would do. So here's to the men in my life who take care of me, and my bathroom cleaning needs! I love you both.

You gotta LOVE those helpful husbands. How sweet of VFR to always help do the Saturday chores which included doing the most odious tasks. I'm still spoiled to this day. How wonderful that your sweet husband spoils you in such a way. VFR always said that since he couldn't do household repairs, he might as well help do housework. It is a good exchange.

It's funny because you won my dad's heart by cleaning toilets. Now I see that it was all a façade. I wonder if Doug will stop doing the dishes someday...

Not CHEMICALS!!!!! Don't forget Earth Day tomorrow!! j/k. Anyhow I remember paying coworkers to clean the bookstore bathroom because I absolutely hated to do it. The toilets are the absolute worst. I think the thing that scarred me the most was the bathroom at grandma's work that was inhabited by a bum off the street and which we would come in to clean regularly (as you mentioned). I am pretty sure I let you have more of our weekly payment so I didn't have to clean the toilet. Bathrooms are the worst!

Makes me think, has Elbert ever cleaned? You are lucky!

Ouch Jen, sad but true! I guess I have to say I was willing to do whatever it took to hook JCR. Even cleaning toilets.

And Claire- thanks for being the second witness to our bathroom cleaning escapades.

Lucky! ;) Almost every time I have tried to "assign" Christian the job of cleaning the bathrooms I have ended up doing it. My tolerance is just WAY lower than his. He will think it's still totally clean and my skin will start crawling when I have to even walk by it. So, it is my job ;) Unless there's a deadline looming like throwing a party or something. Then Christian's awesome at cleaning.

And Jen, Christian did the dishes ALL THE TIME when we were dating. Ha! He so pulled the wool over on me on that one ;) Maybe like you scrubbing the condo toilets, Jord! :)

Jord: Thanks for the shout out! It is a good trade - bathrooms for not doing home repairs. Interesting observations.

Ironically, most the time I make a chore list, Chris choses the bathrooms. Something just draws a man to the bathroom. Lately, it has been my job, all the post-pregnancy hair I've been losing is too much for Chris.

I never knew your dad cleaned the bathrooms. My dad is wonderful, but I don't think anyone could recall the last time he cleaned a bathroom.

Wow! I have never heard of a man cleaning the bathrooms...his wifes or his daughters. I don't think my dad has ever once cleaned a bathroom. And Ryan will scrub our shower/tub for me about twice a year. Would you believe bathrooms are my Daniel's favorite thing to clean, especially the toilet. And those have to be cleaned a lot here lately, because Spencer's aim still needs work.

Jo- that is one reason I'm glad I just have girls, as they should always be able to get their tinkle into the toilet. Boys are just messy that way. :)

Rebecs- I can't believe you did not know that fact about our family...I thought you knew it all!

That's funny Jord. What a great hubby and dad you have. Everyone's strengths are different, and as long as they're helpful then hats off to them. Ryan HATES doing the bathrooms, but I actually love them. Not love like I love Red Robin, but I love having a clean toilet bowl with blue water and water spot free mirrors. I can't stand doing the stove top and oven, and that's where my hubby comes in. How nice to be in our generation where there is no defined line of his jobs her jobs, and it's whatever works in the marriage.

So now J is feeling like the man of the hour as I've come to realize that most men don't do bathrooms! Thanks for the info ladies...I definitely can't complain in that area. :) Maybe if J's job doesn't go well we'll hire him out to do bathrooms.

Katie: Yea!!! I'll email you soon and become a devoted blog follower.
