Imm*gration, Part 1

So here goes my attempt to understand what is happening with Senate Bill 1O7O in our state, and imm*gration in general. It will be a multi-part series as I research different questions with the goal of better understanding all sides to this issue.  Here's what I got after reading the 17 page SB 1O7O today:

-Law created to support a compelling interest to enforce federal immigration laws throughout the state of Arizona
-Law enforcement may ask for immigration status if a reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an unlawful alien
-An individuals status will be verified with the federal government
-It is a misdemeanor to fail to complete or carry an alien registration document
-If the person is unlawfully present in the US, they will be transferred to the custody of the US immigration and customs enforcement or the US customs and border protection or into federal custody
-Government agencies can’t withhold information about an individuals immigrations status from each other
-Against the law- a class 1 misdemeanor to knowingly employ or transport an unauthorized alien
-An employer caught employing an unauthorized alien must terminate the employment of all illegial aliens and be put on probation for 3 years.
-On a second violation, an employers license to operate his or her business are permanently revoked.
-Since December 31, 2007 every employer in AZ is required to verify the employment eligibility of prospective employees through the e-verify program and to keep those records for the duration of the individuals employment or for 3 years, whichever is longer.
-An individual may have his or her vehicle impounded if they are in violation of a criminal offense and if there are illegal aliens in the vehicle
-The act is called “Support our law enforcement and safe neighborhoods act” and can be read here: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf

The Center for Immigrations Studies adds this explanation: "the new Ar*zona law simply states that violating federal immigration law is now a state crime as well. Because illegal immigrants are by definition in violation of federal immigration laws, they can now be arrested by local law enforcement in Arizona."

Thanks, Jord, for the primer on the law there in AZ. Why is the federal government so hesitant to enforce their own laws, and why are the feds giving so much grief to Arizona for trying to do so? It makes one wonder. . .

Good research Jord. It's such a hard problem and no solution is going to easily fix the problem. The Feds has allowed this to go on relatively unchecked for too many years. It's time to do something and I think AZ has the right idea. I don't blame people for wanting to come here. I just wish they would to it the legal way, even though that is an expensive and hard way.
