Washing machine advice

Our old washing machine died yesterday, so we're in the market for a new one.

But my question is this: Should we get a top loader or a front loader?

Any and all opinions are welcome!

Sorry, I have no opinion, but I want to talk to you! Did you come to Utah? Is jake's trial done?

Guess what, Jord? We just bought our first washer and dryer last week. My advice is to get a closeout item or something with a scratch. We got a nice GE (top loader) for $299 marked down from like $700. My wife was happy as a clam about our new washer. I must admit, though, that the front-loaders look nice...

That's a tough one. I still have my old 25 year old top loader, so I can't really say, but it seems like there would be a lot more bending over with a front loader unless you had it built up on something...so, I'd go with a top loader. How is it being back to reality?

My repairman said they are phasing out top loaders and so it will be harder to get parts for top loaders if you need repairs. Plus, front loaders use less water and are easier on the clothes. But, I have a top loader. It is ten years old and going strong.

Definitely front loader since you are not a frequent mover like myself. You see, when you move, you buy the cheapest washer possible, seeing as they break every two-three moves. But, if you are staying in your home, you will save water and energy with the front loader...plus, I guess they preserve your clothes better (that is what the lady told me at Lowes when I was shopping for my washer). Good luck!

I don't have much of an opinion either since I've never had a front loader, but it seems to me like it would be hard to get your clothes to stay in if the door was on the side instead of the top. But maybe I'm not aware of the pro's that go along with it. Good luck with your decision!

Three words: Save the planet!
Two words: wash board!

Jord,
We have a front loader that Brad's parents donated to the "POOR HOUSE". I really like the front loader, but to be completely honest I don't notice a huge different from a top loader.

I vote for top loader. Like Vonnie said, we have a twenty-five-year-old top loader that's going strong, still. Check out the Sears stuff - they make good appliances.

Jordan: Our washer just died too. We've figured out with our moves that buying a used appliance from craigslist only last for about a year before we have to get another. Anyway, we got a front loader this time (yes from Craigslist again) and it uses much less water, we don't have to put as much soap in it and it cleans a lot better. My only complaint is that the one we got doesn't have as large of a capacity as the top loader we used to have. I decided that next time we are getting new or scratch and dent and are getting a large capacity one. Go check out Stephanie's front loader. She has and awesome set!

Sorry to hear it. If you need to use our washer and dryer in the meantime, you are very welcome.

I've used both quite a bit...don't really care which I use. Front loader is supposed to be better for all of the reasons already mentioned. I remember that with front you used to have to buy the different detergents with low sudsing which had a blue swirly "e" on it(cost more). But I think that they're all low sudsing now,... not certain.

I agree that they are phasing out the top loaders. But, there are some junky front loaders that aren't that great either. Overall, my opinion is that it matters more about the brand and quality and load capacity than where the door is.

That said, I think I, personally, would go for a nice, large capacity, front loader if I had the option (and money). :-) Good luck! Let me know if you need to do some laundry anytime!

That stinks your washer died, but kind of fun that you can get a new one now :) We just barely became washer/dryer owners and I got a sweet deal on an awesome top loader because the people had just bought brand new front loaders. I really like my top loader, but the new ones can sure do a lot of cool stuff like steam iron things! Although Jacob just might iron it again anyways.... ;)

Thanks for the comments. We ended up getting a Maytag top loader, as that is what I'm used to and it was less expensive. I do, however, still like the front loader laundromat look. :)
